The Game for ALL Kids!
By Kelly Ross: Executive Director
Just as quickly as things got underway, we're just days away from completing spring competitions. Many of our teams are nearing the finish line in qualifying for our upcoming state finals in our National Cup, Presidents Cup, Directors Cup and the South Texas Cup. The next few weekends will be extremely busy for our state office staff and our executive committee.
As much as I would like to say how pleased I am with all of the excitement and the thrilling games that have been played to date, I am beside myself with the frequency of less than acceptable behavior that has been documented at several games, at multiple age groups the past few weeks.
We have confirmed reports of fights among players, parents being escorted off game sites by local law enforcement, ongoing rules violations of sorts, ongoing verbal abuse directed toward game officials by parents and coaches and a general blatant disregard for the rules of competition and common sense. In all my years of involvement with soccer at the youth, amateur, collegiate and professional levels, I can say with conviction; this office and the Disciplinary & Protest Committee has investigated and will adjudicate more occurrences in the past 6 months than I have dealt with in the past 20 years. There is no clear and defined explanation as to why. I don't understand the abhorrent behavior. It is quite disturbing. And, it seems, incidents and the severity of incidents are escalating with no signs of slowing. I don't know if this is the norm for South Texas Youth Soccer or a growing trend. Suffice to say, strong measures might have to be invoked to address the incidents, to stamp out unacceptable behavior. It seems, the philosophy of "The game for ALL kids" has been lost or forgotten. The Consequences of Negative Parents
What to do about M's father?
The recent death of Salt Lake City, Utah, soccer referee Ricardo Portillo makes me incredibly sad. There isn't a game on earth that is worth someone's life. I read that his family says the parents of the 17-year-old keeper who hit him in the head should bear some of the blame. I guarantee you that neither the parents nor anyone else on the sidelines intended for Portillo's death to happen. But time and time again I've watched negative energy result in unintended consequences. READ MORE....Click Here
