There has been a great deal of conversation about the recent US Soccer statement on player safety and concussions/heading. Some of the information is factual, some is not necessarily complete. There are three links for you to go to for the official statements from US Soccer. This includes their members, US Youth Soccer and all state associations, of which STYSA is one.
Particularly addressed is concussions. US Soccer would like to see heading eliminated at some levels of youth play, and have passed down recommendations for this to be considered. Based on research by medical professionals on behalf of US Soccer, it is being recommended that all youth programming look at policies and/or rules to adopt such rules in the interest of player safety. However, at this time, there are no changes to current policies, rules or procedures. US Soccer, USYS and STYSA are all committed to increasing concussion education and prevention.
The South Texas Youth Soccer Association Executive Committee will address this issue at its upcoming board meeting and the topic will be discussed at our February GBM.
